The “Mr. Robot” Font

Sunday, January 17th, 2016

For anyone wondering about the header font used on this website I can confirm that it is based on the font used for the title sequences on the Mr. Robot TV series. If you haven’t seen it, don’t worry, it’s on Amazon Prime at the moment but should be networked very shortly. It’s about a programmer who suffers from an antisocial disorder, and connects with people by hacking them. I think we all know a programmer a bit like that, if you don’t then it could be you.

Anyway, back to the font, while watching the show I couldn’t help thinking “that looks familiar”. Well that’s because it’s based on the old SEGA font that you used to find on your MegaDrive. Mr Robot have changed it slightly, probably for legal reasons but they use it to great effect.

In case you are wondering where to get the font you can find it at fontmeme. Be careful when downloading anything and check the URL, there are a lot of ads made to look like links to the font. To use it, I then went to fontsquirrel and used their font generator. Download it, unzip it, upload to your font folder (I put it in its own folder called mrrobot) and use font-face to link to it from your style sheet, like so:

font-family: 'My Custom Font';
src: url('fonts/mrrobot/mr_robot-webfont.eot');
src: url('fonts/mrrobot/mr_robot-webfont.eot?#iefix') format('embedded-opentype'),
url('fonts/mrrobot/mr_robot-webfont.woff') format('woff'),
url('fonts/mrrobot/mr_robot-webfont.ttf') format('truetype'),
url('fonts/mrrobot/mr_robot-webfont.svg#webfont') format('svg');

So, hope you like the font, I  thought that I would share this with you as a couple of people have asked me about it.
